Robly Review Summary

Robly was founded by Adam Robinson in 2011. Today, Robly has 16 employees and is used by more than 25,000 businesses. About 75% of Robly customers are small businesses. The majority of Robly customers are B2C companies with an average email send of about 2,500 emails.

Robly is a basic email marketing platform that’s built for small businesses. Robly allows you to create unlimited custom data fields & segments, and A/B test up to 4 different email versions. However, Robly is not as sophisticated as many other similarly-priced email marketing solutions. For example, Robly does not include automation workflows with branching points, which is found in Mailchimp’s Standard Plan. Also, Robly only allows you to add 5 conditions per segment.

Robly pricing starts at $19 per month and increases depending on your number of contacts. Robly includes unlimited email sends for accounts that have less than 50,000 contacts. This pricing model is advantageous if you have a small number of contacts, but send a high volume of email campaigns.

If you’re looking for a lightweight email marketing solution, Robly is worth considering. We recommend testing it against Mailchimp and Campaign Monitor. If you’re looking for a more sophisticated solution with more marketing automation and segmentation features, you’ll likely prefer ActiveCampaign.

Robly Pricing & Cost

Data Integration and Storage

You can use Robly to collect and store data about your customers. This data is key to segmentation, personalizing content, and implementing trigger emails. Below, we explore Robly’s data fields and offer an overview of importing customers and data.

Data Fields

Contact information that you collect and store in Robly is organized into data fields. You use these data fields to segment your lists in order to send better targeted communications. By default, Robly includes the following data fields for any contact you create.

  • Added on
  • Email address
  • First name
  • Last name
  • Status
  • Updated at

In addition to these default data fields, Robly allows you to create custom data fields in order to capture additional contact information that is relevant to your business. Here are examples of commonly-used custom data fields.

  • Birthday
  • Opened recent campaigns
  • Location
  • Nickname
  • Recent purchases

With Robly, you can create an unlimited number of custom data fields. Other solutions have a limit on how many fields can be added per contact. For example, Mailchimp only allows you to add 30 fields for most of their plans, and Constant Contact only allows 20 fields per contact.

Importing Customers and Data into Robly

You can import data through a variety of ways in Robly. Below, we highlight some of the primary methods of data collection.

Pre-built integrationsBuilt-in integrations allow Robly to seamlessly share data to and from third-party solutions. Robly does not integrate with as many third-party solutions as many of its competitors.

Signup formsYou can embed signup forms in your website and emails to capture customer data.

Segmentation

Robly’s platform includes segmentation tools that you can use to create segments of customers using the data that’s stored in the system. Using segments is a best practice to increase the relevancy of your emails, and save cost by reducing send volume.

You can define the segment conditions to include or exclude portions of your list. Here are some of the segmentation conditions found in Robly:

Data SourceDescriptionExample Data Points
Contact ActivityThis type of segment condition is based on contact behavior.
  • Campaign activity
  • Autoresponder activity

Robly Segmentation

Robly allows you to create a virtually unlimited amount of segments. However, you can only add five conditions per segment. This is less than many other email marketing solutions available.

Email Builder

Robly includes over 90 pre-built email templates. You can also create email templates from scratch using their drag-and-drop email builder. Robly allows you to add blocks to your email templates with different content types like text, images, buttons, videos, and gifs. In the Settings Tab, you can change colors, font, and formatting. Also, you can change the layout of your templates by adding dividers, padding, borders, and rows with different spacing.

You can preview how emails will appear on desktop and mobile. Also, you can send yourself a test email in Robly.

A/B Testing

Robly includes an email testing tool that you can use to optimize your emails. You create up to 4 versions of an email, and send each version to a portion of your customers. In the table below, we highlight the major components of Robly’s A/B testing.

A/B Test ComponentDescription
VariablesSubject lines, preview text, email content, from information
Email VariationsUp to 4 versions
Testing Pool Size1% to 100% of list
Testing Length Period96 hours
Winning MetricsClick rate, open rate

Robly’s A/B testing tools are sufficient for most small businesses, and are more flexible relative to other competitors in its price range. You can test up to four email versions at a time, which is more than Mailchimp and SendPulse. Also, you can test multiple variables simultaneously which is not possible in many solutions.

Marketing Automation

Robly includes autoresponders: trigger-based emails that are sent to contacts based on their behavior. Automation in Robly is not as robust as many of its competitors. For example, you can not create automation workflows using a visual canvas with branching points.

robly vs mailchimp automation

Additionally, Robly includes several automation and optimization tools that help improve engagement and deliverability. Here is an overview of these tools.

  • Exit Intent Pop Up: When a visitor leaves your website for the first time, there is a popup that attempts to capture their email address and additional contact information.
  • Open Gen: Automatic retargeting tool that resends emails to the subscribers who didn’t open the first one. The second email has a different subject line.
  • Robly AI: An algorithm that optimizes send times, and delivers emails to subscribers at the time that they’re most likely to check their inbox.
  • Robly Engage: Automatically move contacts from the engaged list to the unengaged list. This improves deliverability, and helps reduce cost. For example, if contacts receive 21 campaigns and do not open or click, Robly automatically moves them to a list that does not receive emails.

Deliverability

You should choose an email system that gets a high percentage of your emails into recipient inboxes. In the email world, this is known as deliverability. There are several best practices that email systems should follow to increase your deliverability. As you can see below, it follows the best practices.
