ZenMate VPN Review Summary

ZenMate VPN was founded in 2013 by Markus Hänel and Simon Specka. Since then, the solution has been used by more than 22 million users.

ZenMate VPN’s features are tailored more for small businesses with basic VPN needs, specifically for browsers. Its strongest features are its streaming curation and unlimited device support.

ZenMate VPN’s pricing starts at $7.99 per month. It is one of the least affordable VPN software solutions when compared to alternatives. However, it does offer a free plan.

Overall, ZenMate VPN is a simple solution built for individuals and businesses in need of easy-to-use VPN software. This is particularly true for users looking for browser-based VPN software. ZenMate VPN makes changing your IP address and unblocking websites very simple. Do note, however, that usability and pricing might make alternatives like ExpressVPN and ProtonVPN more suitable for your needs.

ZenMate VPN Pricing & Cost

ZenMate VPN pricing starts at $7.99 per month. It is not as affordable compared to alternatives like ProtonVPN or ExpressVPN. However, ZenMate VPN also provides a free plan with servers in 4 countries.

If users want to download a VPN client rather than access ZenMate VPN solely through their browser, they will need to purchase the Ultimate plan for $10.99 per month.

ZenMate VPN Features

Let’s discuss the major features that ZenMate VPN offers and how they can help your VPN needs. Product screenshots are included to add context and demonstrate the user interface.

Location & Device Coverage

ZenMate VPN offers location coverage for 4,100 servers in over 80 countries. Compare this with NordVPN, which offers over 5,000 servers in 60 countries.

ZenMate VPN only offers browser support for its free and Pro plan, specifically Firefox, Chrome, and Edge. The Ultimate plan offers support for the following devices and operating systems:

  • Windows
  • MacOS
  • Linux
  • Chromebook
  • Android
  • Android TV
  • iOS/iPadOS

Multiple device capability increases for unlimited devices depending on which plan you’ve selected. Compare this with ProtonVPN, which only offers up to 10 devices at once.

Selecting countries in ZenMate VPN is not as beginner-friendly as alternatives like ProtonVPN. More advanced users interested in user counts, distance, and load percentages will find ZenMate’s workflow more suitable for their needs.

ZenMate does, however, come with a “Best Option” feature that will automatically connect users with the most suitable location for their needs.

ZenMate Netshield
ZenMate VPN’s free plan comes with coverage in four countries. Although these coverage options are enough for the everyday user, advanced users will enjoy the flexibility of ZenMate VPN’s paid plans.

Security

Although ZenMate VPN comes with a number of features dedicated to keeping your connection secure, users might appreciate the transparency companies like ProtonVPN have more. Still, ZenMate VPN offers advanced security features for privacy concerns.

ZenMate VPN has servers in the following countries:

  • Albania
  • Australia
  • Canada
  • Estonia
  • Norway

These are just a few examples of physical server locations. Although this might sound ideal, users should note that different countries offer different privacy laws. Switzerland, for example, holds much stronger privacy laws than other countries.

ZenMate Servers

ZenMate VPN also comes with a built-in kill switch. This kill switch is best used when users lose connection with the VPN server. Kill switches block all network traffic to prevent your privacy from being compromised.

Advanced Features

ZenMate VPN does not offer additional advanced features other than its helpful, albeit rather superfluous, streaming tab.

ZenMate Streaming
ZenMate offers a tab that curates connections based on which streaming service or sports channel you wish to access. This means if you want to use a VPN to access Netflix in Italy, for example, you can do so through this tab.

Although this feature is convenient for letting newer users know what services they can access, it is ultimately an additional step in getting connected. ZenMate suggests that these connections are specifically optimized for different streaming platforms, yet in our tests we found no noticeable difference in selected optimized connections versus regular connections to the country of choice.

ZenMate VPN Customer Service

ZenMate VPN’s customer support team is generally helpful. Its biggest drawback is that near-instant customer support through live chat is not supported.
