Webflow Review Summary

Webflow was founded in 2012 by Vlad Magdalin. Webflow’s mission is to help everyone create powerful, visually appealing websites as easily as they create documents. Today, Webflow has over 100 employees and is based in San Francisco, California.

Webflow is a no code website builder software that helps people create professional, responsive, and customized websites. Its platform offers a highly flexible website builder with many features including a blog editor, an ecommerce module, and SEO tools. Overall, Webflow is best for designers with advanced technical skills, and experienced website creators who want more control over their website’s aesthetic.

Webflow is more expensive compared to alternative solutions – its most popular website building plan costs $20 per month, and its ecommerce plans have an entry price of $42 per month. However, Webflow’s website building plan is priced very reasonably considering how advanced its website builder is. In contrast, there are plans from alternatives like Wix and Squarespace that offer superior ecommerce functionalities for a lower cost.

We spoke with Pablo Thierrman, the owner of a film production company called CinePablo. He mentioned that while Webflow is harder to use, it gives you the most control over your website’s design. He also described Webflow as powerful, and likes that it offers a content management system that can automatically populate lists and grids.

Overall, Webflow is an advanced website building platform that gives you the most control over your website’s design. However, its platform is not the most user-friendly, so we highly recommend taking advantage of Webflow’s video tutorials and its onboarding tutorial if you decide to purchase Webflow.

There are also a handful of high-quality Webflow competitors that you should consider:

  • If you want a flexible website builder that is accessible for beginners, then we recommend looking into Wix
  • If you want a website that is great for displaying visual work and is easier to use than Webflow, then we recommend looking into Squarespace
  • If you want a website builder that gives you full control over the functionality of your website, we recommend looking into WordPress
  • If you want an intuitive website builder that comes with basic digital marketing tools, then we recommend looking into GoDaddy

Webflow Pricing & Cost

Webflow’s pricing ranges from $15 to $235 per month. It offers website, ecommerce, and account plans. You can save around 10% to 30% if you pay for an annual subscription upfront.

Webflow offers a free plan that lets you build two websites. However, Webflow does not offer free trials of its paid plans.

Webflow Features

In our review, we’ll walk through the features offered by Webflow. We’ll discuss Webflow’s usability, customer support, and describe the major benefits and drawbacks of the software. We’ll also show real images of the software to give you an idea of what it’s like to use the tool.

Website Builder

Webflow offers a drag & drop builder that lets you edit your website’s pages and customize its design. You can choose to start from scratch or use one of Webflow’s templates. Compared to alternatives, Webflow is the best for website design and page customizability, but has a steeper learning curve. While it is a no code website builder, having some HTML and CSS knowledge and familiarity with Adobe Photoshop will let you take full advantage of its website builder.

Webflow Website Builder

Webflow lets you add a variety of site elements – including images, video, code, and buttons. You can also include a navigation and search bar and edit your website for desktop, tablet, and mobile.

While Webflow does not offer as many site elements as solutions like Squarespace, Webflow site elements are the most customizable out of the platforms we’ve reviewed. We would compare its customizability to Photoshop, where you can edit borders, padding, add drop shadows, and transform elements by rotating, scaling, and skewing them.

Unlike other solutions, Webflow lets you edit your website pages as div blocks with classes and tags. Div blocks are versatile, editable, and are typically used to group certain elements together. These let you efficiently edit multiple elements at once, and make sure that your edits do not apply to the entire page.

Creating & Managing a Blog

Blog articles are written to demonstrate expertise or share an opinion on a specific topic. There are several reasons why blogging is beneficial for your site. This includes:

  • Driving traffic to your website
  • Converting visitors to leads and customers
  • Giving you or your company a voice

Webflow offers a WYSIWYG blog editor and the ability to organize your blog posts by date. Overall, however, we do not recommend using Webflow for blogging. If blogs are a priority for you and your business, we recommend using another solution like Wix or Squarespace.

Blog Editor

A WYSIWYG editor lets you edit your content as it will appear when published. The biggest advantage of this editor is that you don’t need to have any programming knowledge in order to design your blog. While Webflow’s blog editor does not require any coding knowledge, it is not WYSIWYG. It is simple, but not the most intuitive to use.

Webflow Blog

Webflow lets you upload images, videos, code, forms, a search bar, and navigation bar. You can also tag pages and edit the URL slug of a post. However, you cannot drag and drop content or even preview what your posts will look like when published.

Displaying Your Most Recent Posts on Your Website

Displaying your recent posts on the front page of your website introduces new content to your visitors. This can help increase your blog traffic and overall page views. Displaying your most recent blog posts on your homepage is doable, the feature is overall difficult to use and navigate.

Webflow Recent Posts

In Webflow, you can display recent blog posts through a “collection list” site element. This site element lets you source your blog content and display it on your homepage. You can also choose how to arrange your blog posts on screen, like as a grid. However, you have to use other site elements like a div and text block along with the “collection list” element to customize how your posts are displayed.

Ecommerce

In addition to building a website, Webflow can be used to run an ecommerce business. Webflow offers key ecommerce features including inventory management, order management, payments, tax calculations, shipping rate calculations, and coupons.

Inventory Management

Webflow lets you add physical and digital products and services to your ecommerce store, and track your inventory. Overall, we found Webflow’s inventory management feature is above average and comparable to those found other solutions like GoDaddy. However, we found its inventory tracking feature to be below average.

Webflow Inventory Product

To add products to your store, you choose the product type, and enter a name, price, and SKU number. You can also:

  • Write a description
  • Edit a product’s URL slug
  • Add variations of a product
  • Categorize your products
  • Include weight and dimensions

Unfortunately, Webflow does not offer useful filters that you, as the store owner, can use to view certain products, such as by popularity, price, or alphabetical order. It only offers a search bar.

Webflow Inventory

Webflow also lets you track your products by stock amount. Webflow will indicate when a product is sold out and prevent customers from purchasing out of stock products. Unfortunately, Webflow does not let you send yourself notifications when a product’s stock falls below a certain inventory count.

Order Management

Webflow lets you view your fulfilled, unfulfilled, refunded, and disputed orders. Compared to alternatives, the order management functionality of Webflow is average.

Webflow Order Management

As you can see above, Webflow displays the order number, date of purchase, name of customer, total cost, and fulfillment status. Webflow also offers a search bar so you can look for specific items. However, it does not offer filters to view certain groups of orders.

Payments

Being able to accept a wide range of payments will typically increase your website’s conversion rate and revenue. Below are the payment options that Webflow lets you accept from customers. It should be noted that certain payment options also come with processing fees.

Payment TypeProcessing Fee
PayPal2.9% + $0.30 (+2% transaction fee only for the standard ecommerce plan)
Stripe2.9% + $0.30 (+2% transaction fee only for the standard ecommerce plan)

Tax Calculations

Webflow offers automatic tax calculations for different countries, but not for specific regions within those countries. Webflow also only lets you calculate taxes automatically, and only for the US, Canada, the E.U., and Australia. If you want to manually input taxes, you would need to calculate them separately and include them in your product’s pricing. Overall, this feature is very inefficient compared to alternatives.

Webflow Tax

Shipping Rates

Webflow lets you calculate flat-rate, percentage-based, price-based, quantity-based, and weight-based shipping rates. Webflow unfortunately does not offer automatic shipping rate calculations. As a result, you will have to manually calculate your shipping rates, which can be tedious if you ship to many countries and regions. Overall, this feature in Webflow is basic, but simple to use.

Webflow Shipping

Coupons

Webflow lets you create coupons that can be applied towards your products. These help promote your products, and increase your sales. This feature in Webflow is comparable to those found in other solutions.

Webflow lets you choose if your coupon is a percentage discount, fixed dollar amount, or redeemable for free shipping. You can also:

  • Name your coupon
  • Limit your coupons to only apply to certain products
  • Choose an expiration date
  • Limit how many times the coupon can be used
  • Require a minimum order total in order to use the coupon

Webflow Extensions

Webflow offers extensions that you can use to enhance the functionality of your website. Extensions save you web development time and money. However, it should be noted that if you install too many extensions, it can slow down your website.

Webflow offers less extensions compared to other solutions like WordPress. As you can see below, Webflow does not offer extensions in certain categories.

Marketing & Driving Traffic to Your Website

After you’ve created your website, you want to make sure that your content actually reaches an audience. Webflow offers a few marketing features that help build relationships with readers and drive traffic to your website. This includes SEO tools, testimonials, and contact forms.

Online Search & SEO Optimizations

Search engine optimization (SEO) is one of the most important factors to consider when creating your website. The search channel is the largest traffic driver for most websites.

Unlike other solutions, Webflow offers many tools that help you optimize your website for SEO. These tools are effective and approachable, especially for those who are new to SEO.

Below we describe why these specific tools are important for SEO.

ToolDescription
Webpage IndexingWebflow offers an in-platform search index tool that automatically re-indexes your pages every 12 hours for Google. You can also manually index your website every hour. This feature makes sure that Google is aware of your most recent content updates.
Robots.txt File EditorIf you don’t want Webflow to automatically index your full website, you can edit this file instead to tell Google which pages of your website to crawl.
SitemapWebflow can automatically generate a sitemap, or you can create a custom sitemap. Sitemaps help search engines find all of the most important pages of your website.
Global Canonical URLSetting this helps search engines know the proper URL to index, and helps you avoid duplicate content.
On-page SEO OptimizationsWebflow offers basic on-page SEO optimizations – including editing each page’s title, description, and image.

If you’re interested in improving your website’s SEO beyond the features provided by Webflow, we recommend exploring our list of best SEO tools.

Testimonials

Testimonials are a form of social proof that build credibility and trust with website visitors. They provide an objective point of view and humanize your brand.

Webflow Testimonials

In Webflow, we recommend creating a “testimonial” collection similar to a blog posts collection. After you create a collection, you can use the same “collection list” site element, to display your testimonials. You can then source content from your testimonials into this site element and display it on your homepage. Similar to displaying your recent blog posts, you also need to use other site elements like a div and text block to customize how your testimonials are displayed.

Contact Forms

Contact forms are one of the easiest and most effective ways to win new subscribers and capture detailed customer information. Forms in Webflow are simple and customizable.

Webflow Contact Form

You can customize a total of 16 different form fields – including name, email, phone number, attachments, and reCAPTCHA. You can also choose to receive your form submissions by email or view submission data within the platform and download it as a CSV.

Unfortunately you cannot email your subscribers from directly inside Webflow. However, it does integrate with email marketing solutions like ActiveCampaign and Mailchimp

Legal & Security

Having proper website and data security is essential in protecting your site from DDoS attacks, which make a network resource unavailable by disrupting the services of a host connected to the Internet. It also protects against malware and prevents perpetrators from gaining access to your and your visitors’ confidential information.

Therefore, it’s important that your website building software complies with certain legal and security standards.

Webflow Customer Support

Overall, we found Webflow’s customer support to be slightly above average. This is mainly because Webflow does not offer a live chat service.

On a positive note, Webflow help articles are very detailed, and written in a manner that isn’t intimidating for the reader. To make help articles more digestible, Webflow bolds key terms, uses internal links, and includes useful graphics and videos. Unlike other solutions, Webflow also includes a hover zoom feature that lets you zoom in on certain parts of a graphic.

Is Webflow Right For You?

Overall, Webflow is an advanced website building platform that gives you the most control over your website’s design. However, its platform is not the most user-friendly, so we highly recommend taking advantage of Webflow’s video tutorials and its onboarding tutorial if you decide to purchase Webflow.

There are also a handful of high-quality Webflow competitors that you should consider:
