Wix is website builder software that helps people who have no coding or design knowledge build a high-quality website. Its platform includes a website builder, blogging capabilities, email marketing, social media marketing, ecommerce tools, SEO optimizations, and traffic and sales management. Overall, Wix is well-rounded with features that are accessible for beginner and intermediate website builders and ecommerce store owners.

Wix is also one of the more affordable solutions in the market – its most popular website building plan is $23 per month and its most popular ecommerce plan is $27 per month. Wix also offers the widest range of plan pricing from $14 to over $500 per month.

Several customers we’ve interviewed appreciated that Wix is easy to use and customizable. Jacob Lehrer, an architecture student who uses Wix for his own website, also notes that Wix is great for images and can support design-focused websites for architecture, photography, and portfolios.

Overall, Wix is one of the least intimidating platforms that we tested. We recommend Wix for those who are beginning their website building journey and place an emphasis on website design. We also recommend Wix to those who are new to ecommerce.

Wix Pricing & Cost

Wix pricing ranges from $14 to over $500 per month. Wix offers website plans, business & ecommerce plans, and enterprise plans at different price points.

You can currently use Wix for free, but if you want premium features like your own domain or ecommerce features, you would have to upgrade to a paid plan. Wix also offers a 14 day free trial for all of its paid plans.

In our review, we will walk through the features offered by Wix. We’ll discuss Wix’s usability, customer support, and describe the major benefits and drawbacks of the software. We’ll also show real images of the software to give you an idea of what it’s like to use the tool.

Website Builder

Wix offers a builder that lets you customize your website and its pages. Wix’s builder is heavily customizable and user-friendly. It can support beginner and more experienced website creators.

There are a few ways you can build a website in Wix. This includes using Wix’s Artificial Design Intelligence (ADI) technology, choosing a template from Wix’s library, and starting from scratch. With these methods and Wix’s library of over 500 templates, you can essentially build any basic website.

Wix’s ADI technology will build a website for you based on your answers to a few questions. For example, about the type of website you want to build and the features you want included on your website.

However, it’s hard to customize your website once Wix has built it using ADI. Therefore, we recommend creating a website from scratch or using a Wix template if you want full customizability.

When using a template or building from scratch, you can use Wix’s drag & drop editor to add over 20 site elements to your pages – including images, text, videos, buttons, social media icons, custom code, and forms. You can also add key navigation elements like a navigation and search bar and edit your website for desktop and mobile.

Unlike other solutions, Wix includes grid lines that help you arrange elements on screen. Having these lines allow you to create symmetrical designs and ultimately saves you time.

Creating & Managing a Blog

Blogs are informal or conversational articles that are written to demonstrate expertise or share an opinion on a specific topic. There are several reasons why blogging is beneficial for your site. This includes:

Overall, we found Wix’s WYSIWYG editor to be comprehensive in terms of features, and easy-to-use.

Wix’s blog editor lets you upload different forms of multimedia into your posts – including images, video, code, and files. Wix also lets you add tags that readers can use to look for certain posts and other posts with similar content. Tags also help search engines understand the content that’s on your website.

Wix also offers standard SEO optimizations for your blog posts. These optimizations can help determine whether your content sits on the first or fifth page of a search engine. Other SEO optimizations include editing the URL slug, title, and description of each blog post.

Enabling Comments on Blog Pages

There are many benefits that come with enabling comments on your blog posts. These include:

In addition to building a website, Wix can be used to run an eCommerce business. Wix offers key ecommerce features including inventory management, order management, coupons, tax calculations, abandoned cart recovery, shipping rate calculations, and payments.

Inventory Management

Wix lets you sell physical and digital products and track your inventory through its platform. Overall, Wix’s inventory management feature is effective and offers the necessary customizations to differentiate your products from one another.

For both physical and digital products, you can personalize information like the product name, price, descriptions, its search filters, and whether or not it is discounted. Wix also offers a few features that help you to manage your products easier. This includes:

Wix’s inventory management feature primarily organizes your products by in or out of stock. You can also choose to track how much of a product you have left and filter by collection. If you have a large quantity of products, say over 100, we recommend organizing your products into collections to make the inventory management process easier.

Order Management

Having proper management of your store orders is very important in making sure your customers receive your products on time. Overall, Wix’s order management feature is standard and efficient. However, we recommend using a more advanced system as you scale your business.

Payments

Wix lets you create different types of coupons that can be applied towards your products. These help promote your products, and increase your sales.

With coupons, you can choose its type, such as whether it’s a discount, for free shipping, a sales price, or a "buy one get one free" coupon. When creating a coupon, you can:

Tax Calculations

Wix lets you perform tax calculations for the country of your choice. Wix will also let you choose whether to include tax in product prices, or apply it at the end of checkout. A disadvantage of Wix’s tax calculation feature is that you cannot perform automatic tax calculations unless you have an Avalara account. Overall, this feature is easy-to-use, but basic.

Abandoned Cart Recovery

Recovering abandoned carts is a surefire way to increase sales. Wix lets you create an email series that is automatically sent to a customer if they have abandoned their cart. You can also choose how long after the cart has been abandoned, and limit how many times the same contact can trigger this email action.

Shipping Rates

Calculating your shipping rates can be difficult, especially if you are new to owning an online business. Overall, Wix’s shipping rates feature is very organized and intuitive.

Wix lets you create personalized shipping rates for different regions of the US and international countries. You can choose six different shipping types including:

An advantage of Wix’s shipping feature is that it includes definitions of certain shipping terms that might be confusing for first time shippers. For example, Wix lets you add a handling fee to every order. If you do not know what a handling fee is, there is an information icon that you can hover over that defines it.

Wix App Market

The Wix App Market can be used to find applications or integrations that add or extend the functionality of your website. These help you save web development time, money, and increase the customizability of your website. However, if you use too many applications or integrations, it can slow down your website.

Wix offers a market that includes over 250 apps that you can use to integrate with your website. However, as you can see below, Wix does not offer apps in certain categories:

Marketing & Driving Traffic to Your Website

After you’ve created your website, you want to make sure that your content actually reaches an audience. Wix offers marketing features that help build relationships with readers and will drive traffic to your website. This includes SEO optimizations, social media marketing, testimonials, forms, and email marketing.

Online Search & SEO Optimizations

SEO is one of the most important factors to consider when creating your website. The search channel is the largest traffic driver for most websites.

Fortunately, Wix offers many tools that help optimize your website pages for SEO. While these tools are basic, they are effective and approachable for those who need an introduction to SEO.

Social Media Marketing

Social media is one of the best methods to connect with your audience and increase brand awareness. Wix lets you create image and video posts, which you can share on multiple social media platforms including Instagram and Facebook. Overall, while easy-to-use, these features are not very customizable.

Wix offers templates for still posts and videos. For still posts, you can add images, colors, text, and shapes. However, a downside of this feature is that Wix does not directly connect to your Instagram account. You would have to send your post to your phone and then post it through mobile.

Wix’s video maker lets you upload images and videos, choose a layout, and add text and your business information to your video. A disadvantage of this feature is that you cannot edit your images and videos once you’ve uploaded them into Wix’s platform. You also have no control over how text is displayed within your video.

Testimonials

Testimonials are a form of social proof that build credibility and trust for your website and its content. They humanize your brand and provide an objective point of view.

Wix offers five different testimonial templates, which are very customizable. Wix lets you edit the design of your testimonials’ text, images, layout, color scheme, and overall positioning on your website.

Contact Forms

Contact forms are one of the easiest and most effective ways to win new subscribers and capture detailed customer information. Wix forms are reasonably customizable in terms of designs and settings. Forms in Wix can also be easily integrated into your website’s pages.

You can customize your form notification settings, set a submission limit, autofill information, and set a submit message. Wix also lets you create conditions and automations for forms.

Conditions are rules that can dynamically change your form as users are filling it out. For example, if someone does not write in their first name, you can create a condition that requires them to fill in that box before they can submit.

Automations are automated responses that can occur after a form has been submitted. For example, you can automatically send thank you emails to visitors who submit in a form.

Email Marketing

Email marketing is another personalized method of reaching and connecting with your audiences. Wix lets you create email marketing campaigns that you can use to entice those who frequent your website. Overall, this feature is very intuitive, but is best for those who only need to build basic email campaigns.

Wix offers templates for your email campaigns. You can edit these templates by inserting different types of multimedia – including images, text, buttons, social media links, and videos.

When sending your email campaign, Wix lets you import your contacts through your gmail account or a CSV file. You can also add them manually. It should be noted that the number of email campaigns and emails you send is limited based upon your subscription plan.

Wix also lets you track your email campaign statistics. Overall, this feature is sufficient, but does offer a feature that lets you view how many times your email campaign was marked "spam". This information can indicate if you need to make changes to the way your campaigns are designed or written.

If you create an ecommerce site in Wix, you can view your sales information in a dashboard. However, this feature only offers basic sales information. We recommend using a third party application if you want more advanced sales information.

An advantage of Wix’s report feature is that you can choose to display your data graphically. This includes displaying your data in tables, line charts, bar charts, pie charts, and maps.

Mobile

Wix offers an Android and IOS mobile application that you can use to manage your website. Overall, the app is incredibly robust and user-friendly.

You can use Wix’s mobile app to perform functions you would normally perform on the web – including writing a blog post, creating an email marketing campaign, checking your sales and payment information, and viewing different kinds of reports. The only functions you cannot perform are creating or editing your website.

Legal & Security

Having proper website and data security is essential in protecting your site from DDoS attacks, which make a network resource unavailable by disrupting the services of a host connected to the Internet. It also protects against malware and prevents perpetrators from gaining access to your and your visitors’ confidential information.

Therefore, it’s important that your website building software complies with certain legal and security standards.

Wix Customer Support

Quality and efficient customer support is essential in guaranteeing a satisfactory customer experience. Overall, we found Wix’s customer support to be slightly below average. This is mainly because Wix lacks many support channels including live chat and email support.

However, Wix offers a chatbot that recommends certain articles based on what you need support with. We also found Wix’s help articles to be written succinctly and contain helpful graphics and videos.

Wix vs. Competitors

In terms of usability and feature functionality, Wix is similar to Squarespace and GoDaddy. It is similar to Squarespace in terms of design, and it is similar to GoDaddy in terms of usability. Overall, we find Wix's platform to be superior than WordPress for most small businesses.
