Raven Tools Review Summary

Raven Tools was founded in 2004 by Scott Holdren and Jon Henshaw. The company was acquired by TapClicks in 2017. Today, Raven Tools has around 1,600 customers worldwide and is currently headquartered in Nashville, Tennessee.

Raven Tools offers most of the major SEO features including a site auditor, a backlink explorer, and a keyword research database. It also incorporates helpful integrations to analyze data across accounts, such as social media accounts, email accounts, and ad campaigns.

Raven Tools starts at $49 per month. This makes it a budget-friendly choice when compared with tools like Moz, SEMrush, and Ahrefs, which are $99 per month. Raven Tools is comparable in price to SpyFu and KWFinder, two similar options which specialize in competitive intelligence and keyword research, respectively.

Overall, Raven Tools is a solid software that includes fundamental SEO and marketing analytics tools. Given its low price point, Raven Tools is best for customers searching for a low-cost solution and those who want to organize several online marketing channels in one place. However, if you are looking for a more sophisticated tool and have the funds to do so, we highly recommend opting for Ahrefs or SEMrush.

Raven Tools Key Features

We will walk through some of the major features that Raven Tools offers and how they might support your marketing and SEO objectives. Images of the software will be included to display the tool’s overall layout and design.

Competitive Analysis

Raven Tools offers a variety of features that allow you to compare your site’s performance to the performance of competitors’ sites. Comparisons can help reveal the strengths and weaknesses of your site and give you insight as to how site performance can be improved.

Site Performance

Within the Site Performance tab, you can enter two competing sites into a chart alongside your site for side-by-side comparisons of SEO, site, and social metrics. Below is an image of the site metrics report:

Raven Tools Site Performance

Data points included in the SEO metrics report include:

  • External backlinks (Moz & Majestic)
  • Domain Authority
  • Trust flow
  • Citation flow

Data points shown in the social metrics report include:

  • Social integrations
  • Twitter likes
  • Facebook shares and comments
  • Pinterest shares
  • LinkedIn shares

Each subsection has an information button that provides information and general advice to help improve your site’s score. There are some limitations to the Site Performance tool, like the fact that only two competitors can be examined simultaneously. Occasionally, there is also missing data.

Rank Checker

The Rank Checker, found within the SERP Tracker Rank Checker tab, is a tool that allows customers to examine leading keywords and ranking information for any website. This tool is helpful for competitor analysis, as you will be able to see which keywords your competitors are ranking well for.

”Raven

This tool lists the top 100 keyword results and provides information on keyword rank position, search volume, estimated traffic, cost per click, traffic cost, and SERP feature.

Competitor Manager

The Competitor Manager tab is a simple categorization tool where customers can see a high-level overview of competitors. This tool compares site quality with information pulled from Moz and Majestic. One benefit is that users on any plan can add an unlimited number of competitors to this list.

Research Central

Once you select a competitor’s site from within the Competitor Manager, an overview of that site’s metrics will be provided in the Research Central report.

“Raven

Information provided about competitors in this report includes:

  • Summary of site metrics
  • Site quality rankings including page authority, domain authority, and more
  • The site’s top keywords and phrases
  • Pages that rank well in SERP results
  • Banklink information
  • Semantic and design analyzers

If you select the “Keywords” tab within Research Central, you will remain in the same view, but will now be within the Keyword Research section of the software. This is one example of the tool being confusing to navigate.

Keyword Research

Conducting keyword research is an important aspect of marketing and SEO. It allows you to understand how competitive a keyword is to rank for, the search volume of a given keyword, and more. Raven Tools gathers keyword information from different sources such as Moz, Google, Majestic, Open Calais, and Bing. Overall, we found Raven Tools to be effective for basic keyword research. However, Raven Tools does have a significantly smaller keyword database compared to other tools – Raven Tools has 1.4 billion vs. 20 billion for SEMrush.

Keyword Research Central

When entering keywords into the Raven Tools Keyword Research Central, customers are presented with a keyword summary, competitors who rank for the same keyword, and search volume. Information presented in the summary includes global and local search volume trends.

“Raven

The search volume tab also offers keyword suggestions. Below is an image of how Raven Tools displays search volume and advertiser competition for the specified keyword and relevant keywords:

SERP Tracker Keywords

The SERP Tracker tool allows you to upload your website’s most important keywords and track their performance in organic search. Within the SERP Tracker tool, the “Keywords” section provides a beneficial view of keyword rankings for your site. You will be able to enter keywords you wish to track, change the date range for each position check, and see ranking change over time.

“Raven

This same tool also offers suggested keywords that are relevant to your pertinent keywords. Information in this section includes keywords and each keyword’s search volume, competition, and CPC.

Site Auditor

Site auditing is a method by which a site is assessed for SEO performance. This is an imperative tool that will help you understand and correct SEO issues that may be negatively impacting your site’s search traffic and rankings. Raven Tools comes with two site auditing sections – both of which are effective and provide an easy-to-visualize list of the site’s issues.

Here is an image of the Site Auditor Classic, which shares the number and type of your SEO issues:

“Raven

This tool breaks issues down into six categories:

  • Visibility issues
  • Meta issues
  • Content issues
  • Link issues
  • Image issues
  • Semantic issues

You will be able to check the desktop and mobile page speeds. Raven Tools also compares crawls completed on different dates to determine whether your efforts to rectify issues have been effective.

Raven Tools more recently launched the Site Auditor Studio, which provides a different view of the crawl. The Auditor Studio provides an overall score for your site and breaks issues down into Critical, Warning, and Needs Attention.

“Raven

The auditor will give a short message as to what the error is, explain why the error hinders your site, and link out to an article about how to fix the error. Once going to your site and correcting errors, you will be able to mark issues as “fixed”.

Backlink Analysis

Backlinks are a crucial part of SEO strategy. They vouch for a website’s trustworthiness and reputability, so it’s important to both understand and build your site’s backlink profile. Raven Tools includes a Backlink Explorer, Link Spy, Link Manager, and website directory to monitor the quality and amount of backlinks for your site and your competitors’ sites. One drawback is that the Link Building section itself does not include a backlink dashboard, like the one found in Serpstat. To access backlink graphs, you will need to switch to a different part of the tool, like the Research Central or the main Raven Tools dashboard.

Backlink Explorer

The Backlink Explorer is a tool to help monitor your backlink profile. You can input any URL or domain to examine the number of backlinks, backlink sources, and more. While helpful, this tool is a bit less powerful than Ahrefs and other leaders in backlink monitoring.

“Raven

Information provided by the Backlink Explorer consists of:

  • Source URL
  • Target URL
  • Citation flow
  • Anchor text

Link Spy

The Link Spy is a tool that helps you identify new link opportunities. It provides a list of competitors that rank for target keywords and displays who is backlinking to their sites. These sites are more likely to backlink to your related content.

“Raven

Once you select a competitor’s site, you will be able to view a breakdown of that backlink profile, with information like link date, citation flow, and anchor text.

Link Manager

The Link Manager stores link data and allows you to monitor existing backlinks. This is especially useful for marketing agencies that want to keep track of the links they’ve won for clients. Within this tool, links can be monitored, grouped, and organized. Functions of the Link Manager include:

  • Summary of link information
  • Contact information for link record
  • Link monitoring results
  • Task assignment tab
  • Notes for team members
  • Link history

WYSIWYG Reports

WYSIWYG reports are helpful tools that organize pertinent SEO and marketing data. This tool is particularly advantageous for those who wish to provide clients with white labeled marketing reports, as the reports are customizable. Below is an example of metrics you can include in a report.

“Raven

The Raven Tools WYSIWYG reports can be generated daily, weekly, monthly, or quarterly. Once generated, these white label reports can be sent to clients as HTML links, PDF links, or PDF attachments. Widgets and data that can be added to these customized reports include but are not limited to:

  • Email Metrics
  • Google Analytics
  • Keyword Manager
  • SEO Metrics
  • SERP Tracker
  • Site Auditor
  • Site Performance

Integrations

Raven Tools has developed integrations with many popular software tools. These integrations are helpful to contain data from different platforms in one place. Specific examples of software Raven Tools integrates with are:

  • Bing Ads
  • Campaign Monitor
  • Constant Contact
  • Facebook
  • Google Ads
  • Google Search Console
  • LinkedIn
  • Mailchimp
  • Twitter
