HelloSign Review Summary

HelloSign was founded in 2011 by Joseph Walla and Neil O’Mara. The company’s goal is to create products that help customers operate more efficiently by streamlining document management. HelloSign was acquired by Dropbox in 2019. Today, HelloSign has over 150 employees and is based in San Francisco, California.

HelloSign is an electronic signature tool that helps individuals and businesses streamline their digital document workflows. Its platform includes key core features like legally binding signatures, templates, audit reports, flexible signing, and document storage. HelloSign’s application also includes some nice-to-have features not found in other solutions.

HelloSign is one of the more reasonably priced electronic signature solutions in the market. Unlike most of its competitors, HelloSign offers a free plan. Also, its advanced plans are similarly priced to competitors like DocuSign and signNow.

Overall, we found that HelloSign is ideal for those who need a more advanced electronic signature solution, but do not need all of the bells and whistles offered in high-end solutions like DocuSign. If your document workflow is simpler, then we recommend looking into Docsketch, which is more basic and affordable than HelloSign. Finally, if you need a solution for your sales team, then we recommend looking into PandaDoc or Proposify.

HelloSign Pricing & Cost

HelloSign Features

Below, we discuss the key features of HelloSign. We also include screenshots of the product to give you an idea of its design and architecture.

Templates & Document Editing

Templates and document editing are two key features of electronic signature software. For these features, we found HelloSign’s platform to be simple and easy to use. However, it does not come with all the features found in more advanced tools like DocuSign.

Templates

HelloSign does not provide pre-built templates, but does let you create your own. Creating templates and reusing them for documents you commonly execute help keep your content consistent and saves you time.

HelloSign’s platform for creating, editing and using templates is simple and efficient. You start by uploading any of the following 14 document types:

  • PDF
  • Doc
  • Docx
  • HTML
  • Txt
  • PNG
  • JPG
  • JPEG
  • GIF
  • Xls
  • Xlsx
  • Ppt
  • Pptx
  • Ppsx

You can then add roles or stakeholders, which represent the type of people who receive and sign your templates (e.g. managers, clients, business partners). Finally, you can add the necessary fields to your template (e.g. signatures, initials and dates).

Document Editing

HelloSign’s document editor makes it easy to add fields to documents. In addition, it includes document navigation features that are not found in most alternatives. However, one downside is that HelloSign does not let you edit the text copy of your uploaded documents. This means you would need to make copy changes to your document in another application and reupload it into HelloSign. This can be tedious and time consuming.

HelloSign Document Editor

As seen above, HelloSign lets you drag and drop five different fields into documents, including legally binding signatures. You can also zoom into documents and navigate each document by page. HelloSign also includes keyboard shortcuts, which help you edit documents without a mouse.

Additional Editing Features

HelloSign lets you add custom branding to outgoing emails and customize the application’s language. These capabilities help elevate your company’s brand and improve communication with stakeholders.

The outgoing email elements that HelloSign lets you customize include:

  • Uploading a company logo
  • Including a company tagline (displayed underneath logo in outgoing emails)
  • Editing the email sender’s name
  • Editing an email signature

The interface used to sign documents in HelloSign can be translated into 11 languages besides English, which include:

  • Chinese (Simplified & Traditional)
  • Spanish
  • Japanese
  • Korean
  • Latin-based languages
  • Czech
  • Turkish
  • Russian

Document Workflow

HelloSign’s platform includes tools to help you manage your document workflow. This includes the sending, signing and storing of your documents.

Document Sending

There are several ways to send documents using HelloSign. This includes uploading a CSV file, using a template or generating a signing link for mass signatures and in-person signing.

The most popular method of sending documents is via email. Through this method, you can customize the document title, a message for the signers, request attachments from signers and assign who gets CC’d.

HelloSign Document Sending

Real-time Notifications and Reminders

After a document is sent, HelloSign will send you email notifications. You can set which notifications you and your recipients receive. Examples of email notifications include when you or a recipient signs a document and when a recipient has viewed a document.

You can also enable automatic reminders for recipients who still need to sign or finish a document. These reminders will be sent three and seven after each document is sent.

Document Signing

The next step in the document workflow is document signing. Overall, we found it simple to sign documents in HelloSign. The platform includes useful features such as a “Next” button, which guides recipients to the fields that must be signed. However, HelloSign does lack some key features that would make the signing process more efficient, such as being able to navigate a document by page and adding comments.

HelloSign Document Signing

Document Storage

It is important that after you have executed your documents, you are able to efficiently access them. While effective, we found that HelloSign’s cloud-based document storage is not as streamlined as some of its competitors.

HelloSign does include a search bar and automatically organizes documents by status. You can also choose to search for documents based on recipients, senders, a date range and by template owner.

However, HelloSign does not allow you to create custom folders for your documents. This can make accessing documents inefficient, especially if you want to organize your documents by company or by type.

Integrations & API

HelloSign has developed integrations and an API to help customers streamline their document workflows. These allow you to integrate your existing software applications with HelloSign, and build custom applications using HelloSign’s functionality.

HelloSign integrates with 14 applications, which include:

  • Salesforce
  • NetSuite
  • HubSpot
  • Google Drive
  • OneDrive
  • Dropbox
  • Box
  • Zapier

Mobile

Overall, signing documents through mobile for HelloSign is inefficient. This is partly because HelloSign does not currently offer its own mobile application.

HelloSign Mobile

As seen above, HelloSign on mobile includes a “Next” button, which is useful for navigating a document for fields. However, you are unable to zoom in on the document. This is an example of the important features that HelloSign’s mobile experience does not offer.

Customer Support

Having efficient customer support is critical in ensuring a satisfactory customer experience. Overall, we found HelloSign to have average customer support. For example, when using live chat support, it can be challenging to connect with an actual person from their team. There were also a few times HelloSign did not answer our questions.
